      • How will teachers build the new expertise needed for new TEKS

ORGANIZATION & STRUCTURE OF TEKS
  • TEKS
    • DEVELOPMENT:Who develops & adopts the TEKS: see Handout #2- Social Studies TEKS and the Law (Texas Administrative Code Title 19, Part II, Chapter 113-Social Studies/Chapter 118-Economics
    • STRUCTURE:
      • STRAND--> Knowledge & Skills statements has a concepts
        • 18) Economics: The student understands the historical origins of contemporary economic systemsand benefits of free enterprise in world history. The student is expected to:
          • Identify the historical origin and characteriscs of free enterprise system, including the contributions of Adam Smith, especially the influence of his ideas found in The Wealth of Nations (test writers will look at including/such as statements as possible testable areas)
      • Two different types of TEKS
        • CONTENT (about 120)
        • SKILLS (about 14)
        • EOC questions won't be strictly skill based---they will be integrated
      • CONTENT
        • Strands
          • History, Geography, Economics, Government, Citizenship, Culture, Science/Tech/Society, Social Studies Skills (taught in an integrated approach)--> INSPECT
  • GENERAL CHANGES
    • New TEKS add specificity to old TEKS
    • Make sure that you look at the INCLUDING/SUCH AS and see how they are listed in the TEKS
      • ex. John Calvin and Thomas Aquinas are not noted for their religious contributions but for GOVERNMENTAL connections
      • Make sure that you are teaching new terminology
        • democratic republic--> constitutional republic
        • capitalism/free market system--> U.S. free enterprise system
        • Freedom Week: typically the 3rd week of September--> does not have to be
